We can ask again; how did we get to this point of widespread chronic diseases and obesity? Didn’t our ancestors know how to eat and how to have healthy children?

In order for the industrial food industry to have the much-needed authority, old ancestral knowledge of food use and preparation had to be depicted as primitive.

I thought I finished with the official players in the “bad diet advice” business. However, intriguing facts of the even more distant past, will create a fascinating continuous story line. I just could not resist.

In the previous blogs I mentioned Ancel Keys (Mr Cholesterol) as the promoter of the “saturated fat bad, meat bad” narrative. However, he was standing on the shoulders of a religious force that still determines our dietary guidelines.

Many powerful leaders knew that the biggest threat to any system is a new powerful ideology. If it also manages to convince people that it comes from God, the old system is doomed.

Dietary advice created by the interpreters of the needs of the Creator

First off, I must mention a Presbyterian minister, Sylvester Graham (1794-1851) who in order to control lustful thoughts and action prescribed a high-fiber vegetarian diet. He also promoted bread rich in fiber, that lead to the creation of crackers, cookies and the like. Apparently, he died age 57, as an angry, lonely man. Some say this could be the result of protein deficiency and unstable blood sugar. His teachings were further expanded by the most important force in today’s dietary narrative; the Seventh-day Adventist church.

The Church

Two biographies connected to the Church, that must be researched if you wish to understand our dietary guidelines are: the “prophetess of Health” Ellen G. White (1827-1915) and John H. Kellogg (1852-1943), the spiritual and material might behind the creation of modern-day food industry. They maintained that only a diet without animal products can lead one to the Creator. One must then eat, a “garden of Eden” diet. I wonder how they missed the story of Cain and Able.

Cain was a farmer and Abel a shepherd. They brought an offering unto the lord. Cain the fruits of the ground and Abel the firstlings of his flock and the fat thereof. God had no respect for Cain and his offering. For some unexplained reason the vegetarian kills his own meat-eating brother.

The food industry

To make it easier for the plebs they created and later manufactured substitutes to animal products. In comes the sugared breakfast serials fortified with fiber, breakfast bars, peanut butter spreads, soy and almond milk and protein energy drinks. All on the road to meet the Creator, no matter how obese or sick we are.

Mr Kellogg had a very interesting prescription for health: Course vegetarian diet, one to three ounces (28-85g) of bran daily, and paraffin oil with every meal.

Paraffin oil to the rescue

The paraffin (lamp oil) was needed as a laxative and lubricant for the large stools and its side effects; haemorrhoids, anal lacerations and general pain when defecating.

You will say, come on, we have gone a long way since then. Yes, we certainly have, but the Adventist mind set has been with us for the journey as well. There is now a new addition or spin to the vegetarian diet. We must stop eating animal products, in order to save the planet.

The above may serve well as an intro to the fascinating world of dietary narrative creation.

Two quotes from Ellen G. White:

“The health food business… is to supply the people with food which will take the place of flesh meat, and also milk and butter….”

“Our fare is simple and wholesome. We have on our table no butter, no meat, no cheese, no greasy mixtures of food. Food should be prepared in as simple a manner as possible, free from an undue amount of salt.”

I would also recommend the in-depth research of this topic by Belinda Fettke at: https://www.isupportgary.com/articles/seventh-day-adventist-plant-based-nutrition

“People are destroyed for lack of knowledge”

Ok, before I get to a few deeply religious thinkers, let’s remind ourselves how this works:

Official, powerful theories come from industry sanctioned positions of authority and big money. As stated in my previous blogs, an idea has to be subsidised in order to take root. We could say that we follow a “Diet by Media” in so many ways.

We should now be aware that corporations may only look after their material interests, they must create profit, regardless of the true cost to individuals and society. Corporations spend big on advertising. Media looks after clients that use their advertising services. Big spenders in our Media Diet will not be critiqued. Our knowledge of the information processes will protect us from new scientific trends promoted on the mainstream media.

Scary medical stories create fear

We must also be aware that we are suckers for scary medical stories. If it bleeds, it leads, they would say in the media ivory towers. We are fed a steady diet of fear inducing headlines in the newspapers and TV. Fear makes us more suggestable. We worry so much that we may fall into a pathological trance.

Loop Trance Thinking

Loop trance thinking is constantly asking oneself, how am I doing? This loop trance thinking might present like this: “oh, pain, not happy, sleepy, bloated, tired, depressed, well, then I must see my doctor, or buy something”. We create hundreds of what if scenarios that place us into the black and white thinking space. What we imagine creates our world-view, beliefs and actions.

Modern media and side effects

Our modern media points out strategic problems and also presents solutions. Solutions created by the corporations that have most often created the problem in the first place. Think of industrial food, herbicides, MSG, seed oils, sugar, soft drinks and legal drug created side-effects that must be treated by more drugs.

I once treated a patient complaining (in his own words) “of constant feeling of flu like symptoms”, headache, nausea, fatigue, sleep problems etc No herbs or acupuncture or even change in diet offered much help. After a few treatments and me asking about other issues, he remembered the fact that he has been taking “Zantac” for reflux. Well, the list of side effects for Zantac mirrors all his symptoms. He changed his diet, stopped taking Zantac and the symptoms cleared.

Pharma

Johnson and Johnson, a multinational, medical devices, pharmaceutical manufacturing company with a revenue of 76.45 billion dollars, spends more money on marketing than on research. In 2015, 17.5 billion dollars was spent on advertising and only 8.2 on research and development. If marketing is the art of selling a product, all that money from just one pharmaceutical company must have implanted a lot of essential, “I must have that” product images in our minds.

Very powerful Book

In his 2013 book “Deadly medicines and Organised Crime”, Peter Gotzsche quotes a former vice-president of Pfizer:

“It is scary how many similarities there are between this industry and the mob. The mob makes obscene amounts of money, as does this industry. The side effects of organized crime are killings and deaths, and the side effects are the same in this industry. The mob bribes politicians and others, and so does the drug industry…”

We can again ask; how did we get to this point of widespread chronic diseases and obesity? Didn’t our ancestors know how to eat and how to have healthy children?

In order to accept the food industry as serious authority, old ancestral knowledge of food use and preparation had to be depicted as primitive.

The only way to escape the power of big business sanctioned advice (diet by media) is to become our own doctors.

In the next post, I still have more information on the history of dietary advice!

Mr Cholesterol!

Dr Keys or Mr Cholesterol recommended reducing saturated fat in one’s diet to only 4%, as the only way of lowering cholesterol and saving yourself from heart disease. He also believed that industrial seed oils would help prevent heart disease. It is, however, well-recorded (Times magazine 13Jan. 1961) that this man never followed his own advice. Regardless, his ideas got all the nourishment needed, while all the opposing thoughts had no media space or nourishment. To confirm the bias of the AHA, we must also mention Dr Moses, who led AHA from 1965 to 1973. He posed with a bottle of Crisco oil in a health education film seen by millions of Americans.

Dr Stamler, mentioned above, before his dominant role in the AHA, did lab research “on the influence of female hormones on diet-induced atherosclerosis in chickens”.

Corn Products Company as a book publisher?

His 1963 book, “Your heart has nine lives” was published by the Corn Products Company (manufacturers of Mazola corn oil) and distributed free of charge to doctors in America. Whether any conclusions from his lab work influenced, his book is unknown. In her excellent book “The big fat surprise” Nina Teicholz quotes Dr Stamler: “Scientists in public health must make alliances with industry”.

The “Corn Product Company” is now called Ingredian, and one wonders how many scientists have aligned themselves with its production, in our time. The company website is mostly in beautiful, nature-inspired green colours with a healthy young woman, eating something (must be healthy) from a bowl. According to their site, it is a “global ingredients solution company, for foods and beverages to paper and pharmaceuticals”. For 2017 it reported 6.18 billion dollars in net sales.

I could go on and on, about the big evil players that sold us the “industry oils are healthier” mantra, in cooperation with the medical and media organisations. Still, it is a massive and sad unravelling.

Is calorie just a calorie regardless of where you get it? Is getting nourishment from sugar the same as getting that calorie from butter or margarine? Is cholesterol such an important marker in determining heart attacks? Why is there a need to put sugar in most packaged products, including bacon and salmon?

Profit is more important

It seems that we all believe in what gives us the most benefit. We align with the powerful and charismatic leaders, even when we are not sure of their ideology. We are often paid not to see the truth. We hypnotise ourselves to distrust what is right in front of us.

Same same but different

I have worked in the gaming industry for 13 years. Gaming is a PR weasel word for gambling. For most of that time, I refused to believe the suffering of addicted people. I was hypnotised not to see the truth. Paid travel to conferences in exotic places, to learn the fine art of excellent service may have helped in this surprising “blindness”. You know the excuses; if we didn’t do it, they would go to another place. Or, they are just stupid people. Or we only offer a service, at least we are not as bad as the others. Or we can’t change the way the world works etc.

Pavlov experiments (Classical Conditioning)

But the facts were in plain sight — gambling machines with happy tunes, bells and colours, same as the Pavlov experiments with dogs. Zombie-like people, for hours at a time, in front of screens. They are defecating in corners close to the machine, urinating in the machine coin trays or attempting to kill themselves in the toilets. All this could have pointed to the fact that there is something wrong in official gaming definitions. Gamers (gambling addicts) are told that they should only gamble how much they can afford. It is only entertainment, according to our relevant government departments and the “gaming” industry. If punters have problems, it is their problem alone. They are weak and should exercise more self-restraint.

Industry advice

Well, it is similar in the food industry. We are more obese, and we have more chronic diseases than ever before. All this, after following all the official dietary guidelines. We are told that we are lazy and need more exercise. We are told we overeat and should have more self-restraint. Could it be, that we have become addicted and sick, due to wrong advice, by following the wrong road map? Could this be the result of the sugar and processed food addiction?

Sugar, seed oils and Tobacco industry tactics

Sugar (hidden under more than 60 aliases) and seed (vegetable) oils are in most packaged (processed) food. Eating these packaged industrial products, we may be feeding a process of chronic disease creation. Did anybody care? Yes, but there were too many obstacles and confusion set up by the food industry heavy-weights. It was done through the media, in the same way as the tactics of the Tobacco industry. Feed the public contradictory “evidence” to create confusion. We all know that corporations don’t have tear ducts. Pleasant mission statements will not stop them from creating misery.

Dr Stare and his Coca-Cola snack

Here I must mention Dr Frederic Stare, the founder of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard’s School of public health, and chairman for the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). ACSH mission statement is to “support evidence-based science and medicine”.

For more than 30 years, Dr Stare was the most influential nutritionist, advising on what Americans should eat. Only scientific evidence was considered, I am sure.

He also had exciting health advice:

– Coca-Cola is a “healthy between-meals snack.”

– High amounts of sugar in one’s diet will not cause health problems

– Fluoridation is good

– People should drink a cup of corn oil a day

Who funds the dietary advisors?

In 1960 he obtained a grant of more than 1 million dollars from General Foods. In 1975, the good Dr Stare played a crucial role in sugar officially defined as a safe product. In 1976 sugar was given a label that dispelled all fears that it could cause illness. The person that led the committee to this decision was Mr George W. Irving Jr who previously chaired the International Sugar research advisory board. Just a coincidence, I am sure.

Before retiring, Dr Stare bragged that during his working life, he raised more than 29 million dollars from various industries. He was 91 when he died. It would be interesting to know how much of his own advice he followed.

Has anything changed since then?

No, in 2013 financial documents revealed that 58% of the ACSH’s donations came from corporations and large private foundations. Donors include Chevron, Coca-Cola, Bayer etc. Ralph Nader, a well-known American activist, said: “ACSH is a consumer front organisation for its business backers. It has seized the language and style of the existing consumer organisations, but its real purpose, you might say, is to glove the hand that feeds it”.

I will end with another interesting fact; Gilbert Ross was appointed as ACSH medical director (1999) after he got out of prison for Medicaid fraud (worth 8 million dollars). ACSH identifies Ross as an emeritus advisor

Creating Words

The fact that seed oils are implanted in our subconscious as vegetable oil, points to the possibility that the producers knew, a more positive, fanciful image needed to be created from the beginning. Why else use such linguistic coinage? Well, vegetable sounds healthy, doesn’t it? Indeed, in this context it is a weasel word. It is used for the same reason governments might call an increase in tax, “revenue enhancement” or the military, the murder of civilians “collateral damage”. Fallacies and insincerity must be covered up with long words and slippery definitions.

Propaganda or Public Relations

Just look at this sophistry from another master of PR, John Scanlon (worked for the tobacco industry): “The truth is often, you know, is often not necessarily a solid. It can be a liquid…What seems to be true is not necessarily the case when we look at it and we dissect it and take it apart and we turn it around and we look at it from a different perspective…Whose truth are we talking about, your truth or my truth”? Yes, these fluid definitions of truth came long after the “industry oils are healthier than natural products” mantra was inserted in our subconscious mind. Mr Scanlon, was of course, standing on the shoulders of masters like Mr Bernays.

Procter and Gamble

And now, drum roll, enter the major player in the “industry oils are not only digestible, they are better than natural products” saga. The Procter and Gamble Company!

The Procter and Gamble company is well known around the world. In 2014 it recorded over 80 billion dollars in sales. It is now known for cleaning, personal care and hair products. In our story we will concentrate on its historical, iconic product called “Crisco”.

Crisco

The production of this animal fat substitute was started in 1911. It came with cook books and an image of a modern laboratory and a technical progress that creates a clean and healthy future. As another PR great, Richard Edelman would say: “In this era of exploding media technologies, there is no truth except the truth you create for yourself”. The P&G (Procter and Gamble) company set out to do just that.

As radio became more popular in the 1920s and 1930s, the company sponsored a number of radio programs. As a result, these shows often became commonly known as “soap operas”. The most famous drama that the company sponsored and that we may still know today is “The Young and the Restless”. So, they were into programing. Well, I suppose “program” is a nice and honest word, the same as agenda. Because of this, the question who they were programming and with what, may need to be asked.

P&G to the rescue

In my humble view, the company made a fantastic (programing?) move, in 1948. The P&G company sponsored the bereft “American Heart Association (AHA)”. Did they have a hidden agenda? It was an interesting time, more and more people were having heart attacks and scientists were beginning to blame all kinds of evils, like, vitamin B6 deficiency, sugar, lack of exercise, cars and stress. Capital was needed for research that will determine the cause of heart attacks.

P&G, the concerned company to the rescue. The American heart association received all the funds from a P&G radio program called “Truth and Consequences”. The amount would be about 17 million in today’s dollars. Suddenly there were funds for research and public health education. Other industry giants started donating as well, and by 1960 AHA was pooling some 30 million annually. It certainly became the most powerful heart disease group in USA and the world. It was the single most powerful organisation in charge of research funding and information, regarding heart disease.

Scientific research

The objective scientist, from our implanted image, in a tireless quest for truth and public good, was finally free to come up with independent conclusions. Ah, but scientists need to talk to some committee first, and the committee is obliged to talk to the industry sponsors and the industry sponsors find in necessary to seek understanding from politicians and all require the visibility of the independent, profit driven media. It may also be the other way around. Who knows?

Advice to Mr and Mrs Average

It is a guaranteed confusion for Mr Jo Average, to be sure. Concerned stake-holders (another weasel term) must bring to light the right advice and protect Mr/Mrs Average. Why would he/she needlessly spend time evaluating research papers? There is even less need to know where the funding for the research came from. As Mr Bernays told us in his 1928 work: “….minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of”.

Nothing to see here, just keep moving along to the next weekend, and the ever-bigger shopping trolley.

In the late 1950’s AHA formed the nutrition committee in order to save the doctor’s and the citizen’s time. The professional (one who professes an oath) will tell people what to eat. For many years the committee failed to directly name the evil causing the increase in heart disease. They did, recommend reducing dietary fat for people who were overweight, but failed, to prescribe drastic dietary measures. Now, this all changed when Ancel Keys and Jeremiah Stamler got a place on the AHA committee. These two doctors changed the course of the planets official dietary habits even though they were not schooled in nutrition, epidemiology or cardiology. In 1961 the AHA committee issued a report recommending the reduction of saturated fats (found in meat, cheese and milk) in diets, to lower the risks of heart attacks and strokes.

P&G must make more seed oils

The fact that the report also recommends the substitution of saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats (so called vegetable oils) may be seen as the P&G’s initial bestowment to the AHA finally paying off.

Rereading the first few lines from a book published in 1928 got me thinking. If there is any truth in the passage below, how are we to know, then, what is knowledge and what is belief?

Here it is:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government, which is the true ruling power of our country.

We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. Our invisible governors are, in many cases, unaware of the identity of their fellow members in the inner cabinet” Edward L. Bernays, Propaganda, 1928.

So, our minds are moulded, our ideas suggested, by the invisible governors for our own good. The “inner cabinet” must have covered a variety of topics, from standards of living to healing, industry, food and medicine.

In modern times, and in order to have a “smoothly functioning society”, the people that run everything, must have decided to use the power of authority, the scientist, the professional, to reveal to the contemporary peasants how things work. These “professionals” were also generously helped by the evermore powerful public relation companies. Mr Bernays was more direct and just called them propaganda outfits. The artists of mass-mind. He would know, he was the best.

How can we explain the detrimental increase in chronic disease and obesity, if we also invoke in our mind the popular image of an objective scientist, in a tireless quest for truth and public good? Could it be that the objective scientist got side-tracked with grants coming from industries owned by the “inner cabinet”? Could it be that the same “inner cabinet” is not so gracious and benign?

Why should we take anything that Mr Bernays says seriously, you ask? He died when he was 104 so we can assume that he had a lot of worldly knowledge. His deeds and creations reveal what kind of man he was, and how he may have connected to the “inner cabinet”. This “master of spin” had a very famous uncle. He used his uncle’s expertise in the workings of the human mind, to work his propaganda magic. Edward’s mother was Sigmund Freud’s sister, and his father’s sister was Freud’s wife. Talk about keeping it in the family!

Anyway, lets list some of Edwards achievements:

– In 1913 Editor of “Medical Review of Reviews and Dietetic Hygienic gazette”, distributed free to thousands (137 000 by some estimates) of doctors in America. One of the first magazines of its kind where the advertising covered the expenses.

– Created the “Medical Review of Reviews Sociological Fund Committee” only in order to fund the play Damaged Goods. This fund was supported by powerful people, lets drop some names: J.D. Rockefeller, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilt family. Another interesting supporter was also the importer of the new treatment for syphilis. Mr Bernays called this play “propaganda” for sex education.

– Hired by the Committee for Public Information (CPI) to build public support for the US to enter WW1. He refers to his work as “psychological warfare”

– After the end of WW1, he is part of a USA team at the Paris Peace Conference. He was there to keep up the “world propaganda to disseminate American accomplishments and ideals”.

In his own words:

There was one basic lesson I learned in the CPI—that efforts comparable to those applied by the CPI to affect the attitudes of the enemy, of neutrals, and people of this country could be applied with equal facility to peacetime pursuits. In other words, what could be done for a nation at war could be done for organizations and people in a nation at peace.

— Edward Bernays, Cutlip (1994)

A few more interesting facts:

– Working for the American Tobacco Company, he persuaded women to start smoking, by linking woman’s rights to cigarettes, and the act of smoking to be seen as a gesture of freedom.

– Created the “Dixie Cup” campaign to convince the public that only disposable cups were sanitary by linking the image of the overflowing cup with subliminal images of vaginas and venereal disease

– Helped the “Aluminium Company of America” turn its waste product into a “healing and beneficial” process of water fluoridation. Consulted on this topic for the National Institute of Dental Research. Fluoridation was a process “recommended by your Doctor and Dentist for healthy teeth”. In a 1993 interview Bernays opens up: “Selling fluoride was child’s play…. you can get practically any idea accepted if doctors are in favour…. a doctor is an authority to most people. By the law of averages, you can usually find an individual in any field who will be willing to accept new ideas, and the new ideas then infiltrate the others who haven’t accepted it”.

– Created propaganda for: the Procter and Gamble company (creators of Crisco oil), the American Tobacco Company, Cartier Inc., CBS, the United Fruit Company, General Electric, Dodge Motors etc.

We could go on and on with the accomplishments of Mr Bernays in the art of persuasion, but the above mention of the Crisco cooking oil takes us into the mysterious world of dietary recommendations and industrial food creations.

How did oils get into the kitchen? Historically, they were mostly used to make lubricants, soaps and candles, but cooking with them was something new. It was certainly not thought of by the majority of housewives around the world. How was the public persuaded to view the natural animal fats as bad and these industry creations as healthy and beneficial? As good old’ Bernays would say “a doctor is an authority to most people”. They are willing to accept new ideas just as much as any of us. If the new ideas, are also materially rewarding, support is so much easier to administer. Ideas are just like plants, they must receive constant nourishment in order to thrive.

Guasha and Bioptron Light Treatment

Well, the title itself is a mouthful so we need some short definitions to start us off into another topic about health, with concentration on our faces and skin in general. Certainly not too much concentration as any excess may cause wrinkles.

Facial: Care for the face that usually involves cleansing and massage and the application of cosmetic creams

Guasha: Traditional Chinese treatment that involves instrument assisted “press stroking” of a moisturized body surface

Bioptron: is a medical light therapy device with a specific optical unit emitting light that is similar to a part of the electromagnetic spectrum produced naturally by the sun, but with no UV radiation.

All three segments of the treatment work trough, and with, “Facia” or what would be “connective tissue proper”, in Western anatomy. In the not very distant medical past, the connective tissue was viewed as an inert material covering the important stuff. Now it is seen as an individual organ, that connects, supports and transmits, it is our fluid super highway under our very skin.

Guasha is a simple yet highly effective way of promoting fluid movement and blood circulation in the treated area. This is the main reason why we use it in the clinic.
In facial therapy Guasha is a process which uses smooth natural instruments like Jade, Hot stone or Ox horn that comfortably glide over the facial skin. Natural oils are used as well, so the skin is not only invigorated, it is also nourished.

Research in Germany
In 2007 researches at University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany showed a remarkable 400% increase in surface micro-perfusion in the Guasha treated area. This increase in circulation may have been known not only to Chinese doctors but also to Chinese ladies that were in a habit of using facial Guasha on a regular basis.

Bioptron Medical Device
To speed up the treatment process and to increase collagen production we also use the Bioptron Medical device. The application of Bioptron Light Therapy results in a smoother feeling skin, which takes on a healthier appearance, noticeable even from the first treatments. It rapidly improves microcirculation and cell oxygenation, whilst enhancing the production of new collagen fiber in skin tissue. This in turn will help to restore skin tightness and elasticity. Thus, Bioptron light can refine existing wrinkles and prevent premature formation of new ones.

Collagen

Time for another definition…drum rolls…Collagen: a combination of a Greek word Kolla meaning glue and English word Gen, meaning information. Often defined as the substance that holds the body together.
As we get older Collagen production declines, negatively affecting our skin, joints, energy, hair and nails. The best way to replenish collagen is to have a good diet that includes a rich bone broth. Being hydrated with gelatine on the inside is very important.
In using the “Facial Guasha and Bioptron Light Therapy System” we are also deeply aware that we are treating the whole person, so the chosen protocol will reflect this at all times. The whole treatment is enhanced also due to the bio-positive influence of light therapy, even if light is only received regionally.

Official sounding explanation of Bioptron Light therapy

How is this done you ask…well here is a scientifically worded explanation: The number of the capillaries per square centimeter of skin is between 1,600 to 6,500. Whilst our blood flows through all the tissue of our body at a varying rate, blood flows slowly in the capillaries situated very close to the skin surface. This is an ideal prerequisite for the photo modulation of blood. Bio positive effects from light transmitted to blood in this way can be carried throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen and energy to every cell.

Regular Guasha and Light therapy creates better-looking skin and an overall healthier body
